Last Name 1 Name: Professor name: Institution: Date Can there be harmonious multiculturism? Abstract Cultural shock and confusion often occur in immigrants who struggle to find their true identity in a foreign land. These struggles often vary based on the country receiving the immigrants and its people. However, the most common effects that new cultures exhibit is on one's self and sexuality. In Julia Alvarez's story, the Garcia sisters are transplanted from the Dominican Republic to the United States. The girls experience cultural shock differently, with some of them quickly adopting the culture. In contrast, others take years before accepting the new liberal ways. The novel focuses on their lives in America as they struggle to adjust to the latest methods and eliminate their cultural shock making it a good source for proving the hypothesis. The study adopts a systematic review methodology where relevant peer-reviewed literature is used in the analysis. The study identified 20 relevant research articles that explore the different impacts of multiculturalism on girls' lives. The findings show that a change in countries has distinct effects on not only sexuality and relationships but also family bonds. The Garcia girls struggle with adjusting to the new freedoms which were against their Dominican beliefs. Their struggles lead them to stray further apart and relinquish their Dominican beliefs weakening their family bonds.

The story explores the lives of the four Garcia children Yolanda, Sandra, Sofia, and Carla and their parents as they are transplanted from the Dominican Republic to the United States at an early age. They struggle to assimilate into American society's liberal way of life and find their true identity in the new country. However, they are hampered by the new norms, which greatly contravene their Dominican upbringing leading them to experience culture shock and confusion about their sexuality, language, and equality (Catells, 36). This paper explores how the girl's multicultural identity affects their relationships and sexuality and if immigrants can find a harmonious multicultural identity.
