Throughout the 3 SWAY presentations in this module, we will cover each of these theories:
• Part 1
- Divine Command Theory (Religion)

• Part 2
- Deontology (Immanuel Kant)
- Teleology (John Stuart Mill)
• Part 3
- Enlightened Self-interest (Thomas Hobbes)
- Contractarianism (John Rawls)

- Feminist Ethics
In this presentation (part 3) we will learn about social contract theories. We will look at Enlightened Self-
Interest which was predominately discussed by Thomas Hobbes and we will look at Contractarianism
which is a theory developed by John Rawls.
• Based on the concept of a social contract, may be an unstated but understood agreement.
Between people that abide by societal rules to ensure everyone lives in harmony.
• Both of these theories refer to theoretical contracts, there isn ’ t actually a signed contract by
anyone.
We will also look at Feminist Ethics and ethics of care.
