In public administration, there are many factors and components that need to be present

in order to serve society. One of the most important practices in public administration is the
application of decision making. The case I chose to dissect originates from chapter ten of the
text. Titled “What Are You Eating for Breakfast?,” this study examined the breakfast habits of
Americans. More people are eating breakfast but more people are also eating on-the-go. This has
hurt many cereal manufacturers, but it has also greatly helped the granola bar industry. A large
reason for this is because approximately 40 percent of millennials see eating cereal as too
inconvenient. Instead, these individuals are switching to snacks like granola bars. However, the
case states that a study from the New York Times showed “71 percent of the public thinks that
granola bars are healthy, but only 28 percent of nutritionists agree” (Kettl, 2018). Moreover, the
case also indicates that there are many other foods the public has different views on than
nutritionists. This exemplifies that there is a widening gap between what the public thinks is
healthy and what is actually considered healthy by experts. In the pages that follow, I will
address several questions the text posed to me regarding this study.
The first question of case 10.4 asked me if I was surprised by the results of this analysis.
It is my opinion that I am not surprised by these results in the slightest. I think that it is very
well-known that the United States has been facing a significant health and weight epidemic.
