Moses' successor Moses miraculously crossed the Red Sea (Exod 14); Joshua the Jordan. Moses sent spies to Hebron (Num 13); Joshua to Jericho. Moses instituted circumcision at Sinai (Lev 12:3); Joshua at Gilgal. Moses gave the law at Sinai (Exod 20); Joshua at Ebal. Moses officiated at the covenant at Sinai (Exod 19, 24); Joshua enjoined it at Schechem. Moses appointed cities of refuge for the inadvertent murderer (Num 35); Joshua named them anew. Moses took off his shoes before the burning bush (Exod 3); Joshua removed his sandals in the presence of the swordbearing messenger. Moses celebrated the Passover (Exod 12), as did Joshua. Moses was involved in the giving of the manna (Exod 16); Joshua with its cessation. Joshua is a Second Moses Deut 18:15-19 Promise stated The LORD will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. . . . The LORD said . . . "I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my word that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will cut him off." Hope expressed Isaiah 40-55 and the servant of the Lord Cf. Josh 1:2 ("Moses, my servant . . .") God gives Israel the land because of His promise but Israel inherits and keeps the land because of their obedience. It is conjoined with the Mosaic covenant and provides the reason why God delivers Israel from bondage and brings them into the promised land.
