Equipment that Allows Us to Behave in a Civilized Manner Jane Jacobs discusses our “built-in” equipment that allows us to behave in civilized manners toward one another. What is this built-in equipment and how does it work? Jane Jacobs says that we all have “built-in” equipment that allows us to behave civilized amongst complete strangers. In urban areas, the number of strangers we come across is vast and very common. Without knowing these people, we have certain behaviors and rules that we use during these interactions. Examples of build-in behaviors involve avoiding eye contact with people we do not know as to not engage them, walking to one side of the street to let the others

Unformatted text preview: pass unobstructed and avoid conflict, and not invading other people’s personal space. These may seem like common courtesy, but they are not directly taught to us. These are things that we pick up upon as kids when we witness them happening around us. As we mature, these behaviors around strangers begin to just happen automatically without much conscious effort. We continue to pass these behaviors on to other youths as they witness our actions. Such “built-in” behaviors allow us to live in such a diverse, urban area without creating many problems with the strangers around us....
