Kelly Muse Jennifer M. Konan Jacob Getz Ryan Hourihan Walmart Officials Position Paper Being a Walmart official and being a part of the Walmart family is an honor. The first Walmart store opened in Rogers, Arkansas in the year 1962. Later in 1972, Walmart stock was offered for the first time on the New York Stock Exchange. Its success was visible when the company grew to 276 stores in 11 states by the end of the 1970’s. Now in the 21st century, we have 9759 stores and club locations in 28 countries. We employ 2.1 million associates and provide more than 176 million customers with great prices and products. There has been a lot of controversy over the years; however, Walmart has given back to the community in various ways. We have managed out growth without losing sight of our values to provide remarkable customer service. “Walmart offers good jobs with competitive wages and benefits and opportunities to build a career.” (Walmart Fact Sheet) Being that there are thousands of stores, Walmart needs many employees to maintain great business. We employ 2.1 million associates globally, including almost 1.4 million in the United States and have actually helped the economy in the U.S. by providing jobs for people in all economic classes. We offer our associates a comprehensive benefits package that provides more cash up-front to pay for eligible medical expenses. In our super center, about 300 jobs with good pay, benefits, and the opportunity to advance are given to people. We make it a

priority to recruit people of all sexes, backgrounds and sexual orientation, “Women make up more than 57% of our U.S. workforce, 28% of our corporate officers, and comprise 20% of our board, outperforming the U.S. retail industry average.” (Walmart Fact Sheet) Our company is also stronger than most because of how diverse our employers are. We provide our many associates with an income globally; also giving them opportunities to learn and advance in their area of specialties. We also sells low priced affordable goods that target the middle class. The company states that “price matters to our customers, whether they live in the United States, the United Kingdom, Argentina or Japan. That's why we offer the best quality merchandise at the lowest prices in all our stores, from school supplies, to household items and top quality groceries.” (What We Do) While other retail stores such as Target, CVS, Rite Aid, etc. sell the same products for slightly higher prices, Walmart lowers the price and targets a whole new range of shoppers. Along with cheaper prices, we also have barging deals such as two for one. Besides other retail stores, local convenient stores also
