RECONSTRUCTION – 1/22/13 RECONSTRUCTION Intro to Reconstruction and its “failure” - A 10 year period. - African Americans were allowed to go around and do their own things.  - Go to their own churches, schools, etc. - The Union Army occupied the south and tried to reconstruct the society. - The Reconstruction failed because: - The south community was just against this idea of the people getting the rights  that they shouldn’t have in the first place - The northerners were weary of the time and money spent in the south. Horace Greeley’s 1872 call to “clasp hands above the bloody chasm” The “bloody chasm” was a reference to the civil war - Greeley’s message was both respected and mocked. - Greeley did not win in 1872; but his message is what came to pass. - The north withdrew from the south - And the African Americans were left without much protections and rights - The reconstruction was a failure because it had failed African Americans. - What does freedom mean if you don’t own land. - Many elites thought that the reconstruction had failed because the blacks weren’t ready for  freedom D.W. Griffith,  The Birth of a Nation  (1915);

- What view of Reconstruction and of the freed slaves does the film  present? -  This film represented the view of many of how people viewed the reconstruction and the  African American - Woodrow Wilson was the president during this time. - The fear of white people during the reconstruction was the fear of  African Americans wanted to and tried to marry white women. - The film claims to be factual but is not factual nor hs actual facts/people. - They try to be discriminating towards African Americans and tries to convince the  intended audience of this movie to feel and grow more hatred towards Africans (more so  than they already feel)  -This movie glorifies the KKK and puts/brings them to a savior-lie light - The KKK formed in the late 1865. - The north had supposedly tried to make the south a more pro-black and take away power from  the whites in the south.
