Jacob Getz September 6, 2011 Writing 102.15 Professor Smith 1) Elizabeth Blackwell was born in 1821 and died in 1910. 2) In 1832, when her parents could no longer tolerate the social and political situation in Bristol, England, where Mr. Blackwell was a leading member of the business community and immigrated with their eight children to New York. 3) After six years of adventures – some profitable, some unhappy – in the east, the family decided to move to Cincinnati where they hoped to prosper. 4) For a while things looked bright for the family despite the growing realization that some of them missed England. 5) But tragedy struck in 1832. Mr. Blackwell died. (Correct) 6) Feeling depressed by the economic plight of her family, which now consisted of her mother, four sisters, and four brothers, Elizabeth established a school for girls. 7) By 1839, this school, staffed by several members of the family, had become quite successful. But Elizabeth was beginning to feel dissatisfied with teaching.
