3/31/2014 Need the patents in order to incentivize drug innovation South Africa’s Case In the context of... International Trade HIV/AIDS Poor Countries Pharmaceutical companies as perfect price discrimination Charging each country how much they can afford They want every country to have strong patent protection and a strong monopoly Only a few other countries are like the US - have the capacity to invent and manufacture drugs - We have the science to make the connection between a molecule and a disease - The discovery in drugs is that something that’s chemically manufactured interacts with a disease cures it or treats some of the conditions Other countries do not have the ability to do that (universities, govt funding, scientists…) Some have the ability to innovate, but not manufacture Total 5 or 6 or 7 that have the capacity to innovate Another 10 or so that have the capacity to manufacture Most countries cannot do neither For countries that cannot innovate, better to not have patent protection

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
