4/23/2014 Arguments against universality of human rights - Culture - National Sovereignty The nation state is the basic unit of government The leader of every country and the govt of every country gets to determine what goes on in that country - Stages of economic development 1949 October 1949, when Mao Say Tong stood at the tiananmen square and gave his speech “China has stood on its feet” Talking about China resuming its rightful independence and sovereignty after a century of foreign domination and humiliation 1959-62 1958/59 Great leap forward: 20-40 million people died Mao wanted to increase industrialization Told people on the farms to melt all of the tractors/tools to help industrial development Cultural revolution - the early 60s - Mao decided that too many people were not sufficiently loyal to him and wanted to teach everyone to be more true to communist values - Impacted educational institutions more than anyone else - All students instructed to go to the farm instead of school - Against all corrupt forces
