10/30/2014 - kids as young as 5 picked up on racial attitudes around them - 145 kids in 6 schools in 3 states. 3 racial makeups: - young white children are far more negative than black children - more likely to ask someone of the same race for help - implicit bias - african american parents are preparing their children early on for racial discrimination and diversity - white parents say that if you talk about race, you are creating the problem - 24% saw their own race more positively than the other race Race as Process - Prejudice - the pre-judgement of a person of a particular group in an emotional and rigid fashion - This is an attitude - These attitudes reach beyond characterizing the behaviors of members of another group - Even when presented with evidence to the contrary, one maintains this view - Discrimination - differential treatment of a person due to their perceived membership in a particular social group - This is a behavior - Main forms: - Individual - behaviors of one or several people - Internalized
