Due next Tuesday 9/9 2pm Reaction to the reading, 200-400 words Not a summary Health and healthcare ------- 9/4/14 - A social problem is when members of society reach a consensus that a condition affects many members of the population and needs to be remedied - Doesn't mean it affects everyone...just many people - conditions that affect the lives of many people and cherished values they can be remedied - requires that we use our sociological imagination - taking the personal and connecting it to the broader issue - using imaginative thought, we are able to examine the relationship between the individual experience and wider society - Wright mills explained it as “personal troubles to public issues” The sociological Imagination - Debate in society centers on: the causes of social problems who is responsible for the problem solutions to the problem How do sociologists examine the cause of social problems? - Sociologists employ 3 primary theoretical perspectives: - Functionalist - Conflict - Symbolic Interaction Functionalism
