9/16/2014 3 major determinants of health: - behaviors and lifestyles - environment - access to quality healthcare They directly impact health outcomes Socioeconomic status (SES) underlies each of these factors - indirectly impacts health through its components (income, education, occupation) Behaviors and Lifestyles - most impactful, direct determinant of health - closely tied to morbidity and mortality rates - diet, physical activity, participation in risky behaviors SES components: - Education: - often dictates the access to information and resources that promote health and general well- being (ie. nutrition, diet, etc) - lesser-educated persons more often lack the knowledge and life skills to make informed decisions regarding their lifestyle choices - Income: - Dictates a person’s choices regarding nutrition, housing, schooling, and recreation - Occupation - Occupational status is tied to levels of job related stress Higher SES: - more knowledge of nutrition and healthy lifestyle - afford better housing, healthier food, better health insurance, and active lifestyle -
