Socialization Friday, February 03, 2012 10:53 AM Microsociology - how to form a self? Socialization o How do we become socialized? Identity, self, personality Social interaction makes socialization possible -> must interact with other ppl Objectification of the self - see self as an object or through the eyes of other people o Why is it important? Helps us explain some things at the collective level o Enculturation - anthropology's definition o Learning to be a competent, functioning member of society Ex: learning how to use the phone. How to say goodbye, etc. o It doesn't stop. You interact with people throughout your life. Expectations may change as you move through your life. Rules of interaction o Norms Informal rule that we internalize that governs thoughts and behaviors "what's up" or "how are you doing" is usually rhetorical Rules are crucial for happiness/balance in life Fundamental to having a self How they are produced & enforced by agents Construction of the competent self When norms get out of balance, suicide rates go up We conform to the expectations of others Ex: when everyone else faces the other way in an elevator, a candid subject will conform to the way others are facing Power of Socialization o Heredity vs. environment o Nature vs. nurture o Biological Drives? Food, sleep, going to the bathroom, reproduction

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
