What about the patterns of relationships in their lives makes them who they are? Sociology doesn't explain everything in the social world. It has a unique value At the street/individ level, it looks like a mess. You have to look up above…it is here you see social order and rules being followed o People from all walks of life can all get along at times square fine. Even if they don't know each other o In London, they look left on street (?) drive on other side of the road C. Wright Mills: Promise of Sociology o "the sociological imagination enables us to grasp history and biography and the relations between the two within society" o Principle for sociological insight is interactions between people, positions, etc. o Mills believes sociology does not provide advice on how to lead your life, the choices you should make..tells you about the choices that are presented to you o "relations" are vague - doesn't really explain what he means o What it does tell? Promise of sociology Private troubles About what happens at the individual level (individ problems) Character flaws - person's personality Private matters Public issues Transcend local environments; institutional makeup of society About understanding people at a collective level. Institutional arrangements (a set of rules that govern how people think & behave) EG: female/male income; % in poverty When this persists and happens to a great amount of people, it becomes an issue o Number uninsured and uninsured rate: 1987 to 2009 Roughly 50.7 million amt of ppl without health insurance. How do you get it? Work for an employer who provides it or you buy it. As a private trouble, any individ who chooses to not get insurance As a public issue…US is the only modern society that does not provide universal healthcare Obamacare: most of the framework was from Mitt Romney's plan for MA when he was govenor o Murder rate, by race and sex - 1980-2005 Most murders are between people who know each other
