May, 1962 o 40 males…ranged in age and occupation o Told them it was going to be "memory and learning experiment" o Teacher/Learner are in different rooms. Experimenter says shocks are "painful, not dangerous" o Experimenter instructs teacher (subjects) reads a bunch of word pairs/learner has to remember them. Learner (actor) receives shock for incorrect answers. Increase in voltage for each consecutive wrong answers o Experimenter gives sample shocks to the teacher (shows that he overestimated what the actual shock was) First guy: o "I think we have to find out what's wrong with the guy" ; "the experiment requires you to continue" o Won't budge b/c he doesn't know much about electricity…refuses to continue…at around 150 Second guy: o Initially laughed at the usual "ouch" but then as the guy sounded worse, refused to continue.
