Hinduism 900 million people 4 th  largest religion U.S. has 8 th  largest population Also influential in South America, Pakistan, and Indonesia Not missionary (usually)- don’t try to convert. “Hinduism” term coined by British 18/19 th  century Harrappan Civilization 3000-2750 B.C.E (also called ‘Dravidians) known by archeological records Elaborate cities, drainage, tenements, citadel mounds, and large bath areas Predominant goddess worship Amulets w/ stylized carvings, usually animals and tree worship Sruti: The Vedas The Vedas-sacred scripture ( sruti) of the Indo- European peoples (1200- 600 CE) fire, nectar, sound hymns, ritual guides, counsel for religious retreats incantations, spells, fire and offerings of nectar were important Prayer to Agni (god of fire)- fire/sun/power Sacrifice through transformations Smrti: Epic Literature Epic religious poems are a central part of Hindu traditions Considered inspired- to study, brings merit ---Ramanyana –  “ The story of Rama” (2500 yrs ago) – young prince is raised and  exiled. His wife Sita is stolen by a demon. The Ramanyana details her recue and return. ---Mahabharata  – “The great epic of India” – A struggle between two sets of brothers  over rulership of India. This grows into a great battle in which the god Krishna takes a  side. Contains lessons for devotion, work, and life Ayurvedic Medicine  Ayurveda (3 rd  C. BCE) arose as a medical theory tracing illness to a lack of  balance among three elements- air, sun, and cohesion. Diff kinds of people have  diff balance levels – illness is when elements are out of balance Treatment aims to restore underlying balance through exercise and herbs Yoga Many concepts referred to as yoga
