Markets & Consumers WCOB 2013 Section 005 2/12/09 We will start discussing the group project over the next couple of class periods. The end result will be group presentations, much like a short version of the L’eggs story. There will be 3 people per group. The presentation should be about 15 minutes long. Coca Cola Days 1 & 2 Terms of the Day: - Historical context - Bad debt - Experiments - Validity - Promo strategy - Survey Research - Ethnography Coca Cola was deeply engrained in American culture and not even Coca Cola realized how much so. History: 1886 o John Pemberton, a pharmacist, invented Coca Cola while trying to invent a “magical” elixir for medicinal purposes. It contained cocaine and alcohol. o Frank Robinson, Pemberton’s bookkeeper, came up with the name and logo, then came up with the idea to add the carbonated water and the sugar. 1888-1891 o ASA Griggs Candler, an Atlanta businessman, talked Pemberton into selling Coca Cola to him for $2,300 payable over 4 years so he could market it Marketing Strategy o Syrup plants o
