ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A task of this magnitude cannot be completed without outside assistance, so there are a few people that I need to thank. First, I’d like to thank my parents, Rick and Deb Heine, for instilling a sense of drive in me. Without their approval and encouragement, I would still be in the chemistry department, languishing in a field where I did not want to be. There are a couple of colleagues of mine that I need to thank. The first is John Loughlin. His laughter is infectious and we always had a good time, even if the work was difficult. I also need to thank Karen Ernst. We both arrived at Texas at the same time, and basically had the same schedule our first year as doctoral students. She has been a wonderful friend throughout these three years.

I’d like to thank Doves, U2, James Newton Howard, and Shostakovich for providing the soundtrack to the editing and completion of this dissertation. Without good music, this paper would not exist. iv...

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
