Augustine Response How is it that pride is the source of the allure of all evil? Operating under the assumption that humanity’s want for achievement and  success is an attempt to get closer to God—and the assumption that this is a perversion of Godly ideals—pride is the source of the allure of all evil because the source of pride,  namely the pursuit of power over others, is inherently evil. The essence of my argument  is a sort of triangular, interconnected web of power, pride, and evil. In the passage about  the pears, Augustine notes that he stole the pears only to prove that he had the ability to  do so, thus increasing his power over others and his pride. Now, if we assume that the  only being that can and should have power over humans is God Himself, and to pursue
