Cory Jackson Block B 12/2/05 Vocab Short Story It was the first ice of the winter. I usually skate in my back yard on our rink, but my friends said that Crystal was frozen. Everyone knew about Crystal Lake. The first skate of the season was always the best one. It was also the scariest. No one knew for sure what spots were safe and were not safe. I had always heard the scary stories of people falling through the ice, but I had never experienced the chilling waters filling my skates and the transcending feeling of shock overcoming my mind and body. The reflection of the ice simulated my motions, swiftly gliding along on the newly frozen over surface. It felt good to be skating outside, with the wind gently meeting with my face. As I looked out past the cove, I wondered if had frozen all the way across the lake, to the jaded shoreline. I became even more curious, and began skating. I surmised that the ice had frozen, because it had been so cold over the past few weeks. As I kept skating, I felt as I was gaining more confidence. Then, I felt it, the ice had broken
