Cory Jackson Block B 12/28/05 Overcoming Adversity Millions of people face the hardships of adversity everyday, but everyone has their own ways to overcome it. In the autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” Maya Angelou recounts a youth filled with disappointment, frustration, tragedy, and finally hard-won independence. Maya shows us ways she dealt with adversity, and how she was able to get through it. One way of overcoming adversity in Maya’s life, was her brother, Bailey. One way Maya was able to overcome adversity was talking with her brother. When Maya was raped by her mother’s boyfriend Mr. Freeman, she felt guilty. She wanted to tell someone but Mr. Freeman threatened to kill Bailey, Maya’s younger brother. When Bailey convinced Maya that he wouldn’t let anyone kill him, Maya told Bailey, and only Bailey, that Mr. Freeman had raped her. “In the hospital, Bailey told me that I had to tell who did that to me, or the man would hurt another little girl.
