Lauren Weatherall February 12, 2008 Sociology 101 Professor Guass Research Article: Physical abuse during adolescence: Gender differences in the adolescents’ perceptions of family functioning and parenting Suzanne Sunday, Victor Labruna, Sandra Kaplan, David Pelcovitz, Jennifer Newman and Suzanne Salzinger examined the relationship between physical abuse of adolescents and parenting by mothers and fathers. They want to see if the relationship differs between genders. The scientist used 51 girl subjects and 45 boys that were watched by the child protective services because of physical abuse during childhood. The scientist compared these children to 47 girls and 48 boys that were not abused during childhood and were from suburban communities. They used many different methods to test the children, such as, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale, Parental Bonding Instrument, modified Conflict Tactics Scale (assessing physical abuse/punishment by each parent).
