6 – On-line Assignment (Chapter 11) Clint Coles 1. Discuss the purpose of pretrial service programs. Pre trial programs include bail hearings, plea bargaining and predisposition treatment efforts. These are important because it resolves most cases before they ever even get to court. 2. Identify five pretrial release mechanisms and describe how each works. Indictment- written accusation returned by a grand jury to determine probable cause. Information- formal documents based on probable cause. Preliminary hearing- hearing to see if there is sufficient evidence to show probable cause. Arraignment- initial court appearance, where charges are read, and asked for a plea. Nolo contendere- a “no contest” plea, agrees to sentencing without any admission of guilt. 3. Identify five innovative bail systems and describe how each works. Full cash bail- defendant pays full amount in cash. Deposit bail- defendant pays 10% and then appears in court, and deposit is returned Surety bail- defendant pays 10% to a bonding agent, and the deposit is not
