9/5/07 Chapter 25 Hector Berlioz Born in Leon, France Sent to Paris to study medicine, but fell in love with music studies Mother thought music was from devil Got job in 3 rd grade theater course Won famous prize called the Prix de Rome, all expense paid for 2 year study in Rome Was interested in/obsessed with a woman named Harriet Smithson, who studied Shakespeare He then fell in love with a piano player in Rome, who left him for another man, depressing him Composed a symphony called a Fantastic Symphony for Harriet o Story of a young artist in despair who attempts to commit suicide by overdosing on opium, too weak to kill him and instead became the movements of the symphony They were married In 1843 Berlioz left Paris and went on tour in Germany o Creation of symphony orchestra adding new instruments and combinations of sound o Developing of the program symphony, making it tell a story Influence in France wasn’t felt until his death Also made a great amount of money from writing
