POSC 472 Midterm 1 In a paper written by Clarence Darrow to the prisoners of Cook County Jail, he states, “I do not believe that people are in jail because they deserve to be. They are simply in jail because they cannot avoid it on account of circumstances which are entirely beyond their control and for which they are in now ways responsible.” To me this statement describes what society has become. In these modern times, we are forced to be careful of everything we do, weather it is on good terms or bad terms. There are laws set forth for every kind of claim spanning from a simple case of a pedestrian “J Waking” to a person charged with murder. The concept of “Protect and Serve” no longer exist through my eyes, the justice department is now being run more like a business, and less as a service to the general population. With this in mind, it seems the society is continuously molding itself with the concept of the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. As public services become increasingly more like a business and the cost of living increases people are forced to do what they have to do to survive. An example of this is given in Darrows’ paper “people go to jail to save on gas bills. The jails are electric- lighted. You may not know it, but these economic laws are working all the time, whether we know it or not.” Darrow also states observational research by Mr. Buckle (who was a great philosopher and historian), showing “that the number of people who are arrested increased as the price of food increased. When they put up the price of gas ten cents to a thousand, I do not know who will go to jail, but I know a certain number of people will go. When the meat combine raises the price of beef, I do not know who is going to jail, but I know a large number of people are bound to go. Whether the Standard Oil Company
