Jared Augenstein Intro Psych Chapter 9 Review Psychology Over the Life Span Prenatal Development: Nature and Nurture From the Start Zygote - A fertilized egg Embryo - A developing baby from the point where the major axis of the body is present until all major structures are present, spanning from about 2 weeks to 8 weeks after conception. Fetus - A developing baby during the final phase of development in the womb, from about 8 weeks after conception until birth. A fetus can detect human speech between 25 and 34 weeks and there is evidence that fetuses can learn. ( Cat in the Hat experiment) Teratogen- Any chemical, virus, or type of radiation that can cause damage to the zygote, embryo, or fetus. If the mother catches a virus during prenatal development, the baby could become ill. Maternal use of alcohol, drugs, and caffeine during prenatal development can lead to a host of problems and disorders. Stress can endanger a developing fetus; fetuses of mothers of higher socioeconomic status move less than those of low socioeconomic status.
