PHIL 13 / Class 25 OH Nomy Arpaly, “Moral Worth” (from Unprincipled Virtue ) - Moral Desirability of Actions v. Moral Worth of Actions Madame Bovery, Kant’s Honest Shopkeeper, etc She says that feelings are irrational and that she shouldn’t give in to those feelings She might think that she’s acting irrationally, but arpaly believes she was rational (to leave the program) even though she did not recognize that they were good actions. When the reasons motivate her, she’s rational In a way, she is being moved by reasons that she doesn’t assess very highly, she could be more rational. She wants to extend morality to moral reasons. There are some actions that we consider moral required or morally desirable, that when we do such thing it wouldn’t give us any objectionable reason Ex. Madame bovery You’re not supposed to LIKE her, she’s not a great moral exemplar in anyway. Bovery does good works, she loves morality. But she’s in love with the ROMANCE of morality shallow and self indulged She feeds orphans and helps the poor, but her actions seem to lack moral worth—we are not inclined to praise her. Some other person may do the same actions, and they will seem deserving moral praise. The differences are in the moral motivation Desire vs. moral action The shopkeeper—who is honest that even a child will not be taken advantage of It’s prudent practice to be honest He does what is morally required, but kant believes that his actions do not have moral worth—not moral praise, because he is honest not for the right reasons. It matters when we assess the agent before the action (Mills) Motivation comes into play when we want to see if an agent is good or bad We are less apt to praise someone if they give money to charity if they know its just because for a test write-up Moral praise depends on moral action Right actions that are performed for the reasons that make an action right you’ve got to
