American composer: Arron Copeland’s book: what to listen for in music. He says we listen to music in three ways: 1. pleasure 2. expressive power.---identifying with the music. Can’t always define what identify exactly to identify with. 3. Notes themselves. Mechanical performance. There are fundamentals that afall in the category a. melody…just the way it sounds, the thing you can sing along with b. the rhythm, the beat… c. the harmony. d. The texture---acoustic vs. non acoustic. e. Tone color- comes from changing texture. Two instruments playing sound different than two different instruments. IE: acoustic guitar + drums is different that electric guitar + drums August 28, 2006 Sept 8…blue grass concert. You can do a report on it. Plan for the week. Reading by course schedule.

Tambre—tough term. Tone color, or the type of sound. Each instrument has a different sound. Influenced by several things. Size and a shape. An instruments proportions affects its sound. The raw materials that an instruments are made with also effect the sound…wood, metal, plastic. Also the vibration effects the sound. An instrument is a mechanism that generates musical vibration and propels them into the air. Sound waves are a displacement of air. Several voice and instruments have different ranges Range difference between highest and lowest. Dynamics- volume of loud and soft Register- one specific area of the range. High, middle, low. The voice is an instrument. Voice most popular and oldest instrument. Duh. Women-soprano, mezzo soprano, alto Men- Tenor, baritone, bass Castrady---castrate young kids so they can sing high. Treated like rockstars. Folk music is music on the street. Traveling opera. -Instruments 1. aerophone---air needed for vibration. 2. chordophones—need a string for vibration. 3. idiophone—sound results form instruments itself. Cymbals, maracas 4. membranophone---drums. American Categories 1. Brass 2. Woodwind 3. percussion 4. Strings Some categories like the piano don’t fit neatly in these categories.

Strings- can be bowed or plucked. String works by different down different lengths of the instrument. Lagato- smooth and connected. Staccato- short and separated.
