General Physics Dr. Brahmia 1 IMPULSE AND MOMENTUM Linear Momentum Linear momentum ( p ) is defined as the product of an object’s mass ( m ) and its velocity ( v ). Momentum is a vector quantity and the direction of momentum vector is the same as the velocity vector. The unit of linear momentum is kg.m/s. v m p t p F avr Newton’s second law may be written in terms of the average force required to change an object’s momentum ( p ) in a time interval ( t ) as follows: IMPULSE AND MOMENTUM... Impulse An impulse is defined as the product of force ( F ) acting on an object and the time ( t ) during which the force acts. The unit of impulse is ( N.s ), where 1 N.s =1 kg.m/s An impulse causes a change in an object’s momentum. t F I i f v m v m p t F

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
