Tiffinie Randall Dr. Catherine Rudin Linguistics 24 March 2015 Abstract (redo) The military alphabet is a sophisticated system originally created to identify letters in a message transmitted by radio or telephone to prevent confusion between similar sounding letters, such as "m" and "n", and to clarify communication that might be garbled during transmission. There are other groups who have adopted the military alphabet for its usefulness, like police officers or 911 dispatchers, but does modern society as a whole have use for knowing it? After all, every person can recall at least one frustration stemming from miscommunication, especially since the dawn of cellphones and internet access lead to a huge growth in telecommunications. This essay will examine the potential of our military alphabet to become a functional tool for the everyday person through research conducted with questionnaires.
