Jasmin Sangha November 15, 2007 Biol 482: Animal Physiology Dr. Cohen Review Paper: Paper Summaries The two articles I decide to use are “Glucagon Activates Calcium and Chlorine Channels in Rat Hepatocytes” and “Characterization of Voltage-Dependent Sodium and Calcium Channels in Mouse Pancreatic Alpha and Beta Cells”. The overall theme they share is identifying calcium channels. In this paper, I will discuss the procedures and results of each experiment. The article, “Glucagon Activates Calcium and Chlorine Channels in Rat Hepatocytes”, studied the effects of glucagon on membrane conductance of the primary hepatocytes in rats. The primary conclusion is that glucagon initiates the activation of Ca 2+ current with characteristics similar to those of the Ca 2+ current activated by depletion of Ca 2+ stores, and a Cl - current similar to that activated by cell swelling. These two glucagon-activating channels play an important part in glucagon-mediated effects in liver, especially in regulating ion movements and cell volume. However, the only type of Ca
