Animal Physiology Lecture 11-13-07 kidney phys cont .  there is a salt gradient from low salt in the cortex to high salt in  the medulla…[salt] in medulla is greater than in sea water… nephron  filtration site of bowmans capsule lying around the glomerulus (capillary  system)…the majority of filtrate is put back in the blood by proximal convoluted  tubule….as you travel down collecting duct, water moves out via osmosis…low salt in  filtrate, high salt in tissues…as material passes down, water is removed, concentrating  urine…Na+ is not moved out the descending loop…refer back to last lecture…Na+ is  moved out of ascending loop by diffusion for the first two thirds of the loop…no water  movement in the ascending loop due to no aquaporins and presence of tight junctions… Collecting ducts  Na+ pumps, osmosis moving water out…in lower medulla, urea is
