November 27 Animal Physiology Lecture Notes: Most if not all multi-cellular create some sort of chemical that can affect cells farther away neuro-hormones ---secreted into some sort of circulatory system, traveling around the animal to create some sort of response The endocrine system is tied directly/indirectly to the nervous system in all animals Hormones come in multiple types: 1) Peptide, proteins, amino acid: cannot cross membranes normally…activate cell by receptor binding, signal transduction cascade, so on…can activate various enzymes, cytoskeleton rearrangements, DNA changes…no problem in the blood since they are water soluble 2) steroid or lipid hormones : steroids all from cholesterol…can cross membrane due to lipid makeup…circulation problem since blood is water soluble therefore they must have some sort of carrier while in the blood…no surface receptors since it moves through
