Thursday, 21 February 2008 Personality Set of general dispositions in reacting to external simulations Define how you react in things that happen to you How you go about solving problems Belief Systems Set of pre-existing conceptions about how the social world is organized and how it operates Different from moral judgments, how the world should work Some part of our belief systems are unique, but just like personality, there are components that can be shared o Shared beliefs come from culture Difference o Personality is relatively fixed; belief systems are much more maleable, can be updated o Unlike personality, each belief system is different, bound, and separate Functions of belief systems o Cognitive short cut for actions and filters through strategies Ex: Being chased by a bad guy. If your belief system is bad guys can’t be deterred, you run. You don’t sit there and think. If your belief system is you should fight them, you stay and fight. Belief systems of terrorism
