INTL 4280 – Mitchell Tues/Thurs – 9:30-10:45 Tuesday, 25 March 2008 Institutions as a Cause of Conflict Meso-level – look at institutions as a cause of behavior o Institutions influence the preferences of actors Hybrid democracies – stuck between authoritarian and mature, stable democracy o Freedom of speech, assembly, elections o More prone to wars than authoritarian systems or democracies o Democracies are less prone to war Institutional structures that prevent dissent Need votes o Authoritarian regimes Institutions that crack down on political dissent No political space for opposition groups, civil society Absolute power over the use of force o Transition from single-party rule to multi-party system o Democratic transition increases violence Political space opens where people can voice their opinion, demands, critiques Human rights violations by state against new opposition Know hypothesis, argument, and problems with argument
