To what extent do you think the research methods used by psychologists adequately explainhuman behavior in the real world? In the articleResearch in the Psychological Laboratory: Truth or Triviality, the authorsfocused on a wide array of domains such as aggression, leadership style, helping, self-efficacy,social loafing, memory, and depression (Anderson, Lindsay, Bushman, 1999). They look atcharacteristics that arise in real-world versus laboratory aggression. This article explains thatstudying behavior in labs are more preferred than studying it in a real-world setting. In otherwords, the goal of most research that is taken place in a laboratory is mainly to discover“theoretical relations among conceptual variable that are bever sufficiently isolated in the realworld to allow precise examination” (Anderson, Lindsay, Bushman, 1999). In the articlePsychology as the Science of Self-Reports and Finger Movements, the authors explained a lot ofthe techniques that are used to help explain human behavior have appeared to largely replace it.For example, in personality and social psychology, research pays surprisingly little attention tothe essential things that individuals do (Baumeister, Vohs, Funder, 2007). Human behavior isconsidered to be hard to find. If there is an issue that “offers a representative sample, then humanbehavior is performed in a seated position” (Baumeister, Vohs, Funder, 2007). This seatedposition consists of sitting right in front of a computer. Any type of finger movements such aspencil marks and keystrokes, this represents the greater part of human action. Stated in the articlePsychology as the Science of Self-Reports and Finger Movements“observing actual socialbehavior is more difficult, challenging, and inconvenient than just asking for ratings or sitting aparticipant in front of a computer screen and measuring his or her keystrokes or reaction times”(Baumeister, Vohs, Funder, 2007). After reading both articles and gathering facts, studyinghuman behavior in the real world is much harder than studying it in a lab. There are many
psychologists today that find themselves at a disadvantage when studying behavior. (Baumeister,Vohs, Funder, 2007).Choose one of the articles that you have read for your final project and discuss how it relatesto the arguments made in this week's articles.
