4 February 2008 Events Leading Up to WWI Great Powers . Germany: Relatively new country – Unification of Germany in 1871 . Great Britain: After WWI they were the only country with a Monarchy. Splendid Isolation: had no interest in what was going on in Europe. . Russia: Before WWI, they are backwards – socially, politically, and industrially . Austria-Hungary: multi-National Empire in an age of nationalism. (No longer exists) . France: Never had a Monarchy 1900- Europeans were very optimistic about the new century - Arms-race (Military Upgrade) . 3.5 Million Men in Army in Germany . 5 Million Men in Army in Russia . 2 Million Men in Army in Austria-Hungary . 1.3 Million Men in Army in France . Great Britain had their Navy (No Army) - Twice as large as everyone’s Navy - Everyone wanted an Empire which meant they needed a Navy Series of Crisis bringing Europe to the brink of war Eventually leading to war . 1871, Germany took land from France, Alsace-Lorrian making France angry and France become unforgiving and Germany wouldn’t give back the land.
