MU 2313 Exam 4 Study Guide 2nd Viennese School - Group of composers that comprised Arnold Schoenberg and his pupils and close associates in early 20th century Vienna, where he lived and taught, sporadically between 1903 and 1925. The principal members of the school included Alban Berg and Anton Webern, who were among his first composition students. Aaron Copland - Integrated American idioms such as jazz, dissonance, Mexican folk song, and Shaker hymnody into his compositions. Copland’s most significant work is Appalachian Spring . Copland employs a variety of styles, some harmonically complex, some simple. He may use all the tones of the diatonic scale simultaneously as in the opening chord, but generally his style remains fairly traditionally tonal. His energetic use of rhythms, interrupting and displacing regular meter, has been highly influential in twentieth-century American music. Aaron Douglas - Arguably the foremost painter of the Harlem Renaissance in highly stylized work, explores a palette of muted tones. Douglas was particularly well known for his illustrations and cover designs for many books by African-American writers. His portrait of Aalta exhibits warmth and relaxation, and its color and line express dignity, elegance, and stability. The master of many styles, Douglas proved extremely effective in his realistic work. Abstract Expressionism - An art style characterized by non traditional brushwork and nonrepresentational subject matter. Abstraction - Also known as Abstract Art, Non representationalism. Art which depicts the essence of a thing rather than its actual appearance. Akhnaten - Philip Glass’s opera. We can hear similar minimalist repetition of musical cells to create a hypnotic effect. The third in a trilogy of operas, it portrays the central character’s inner vision, which profoundly altered the age in which he lived. Albert Camus - Illustrated the existentialist viewpoint in his essay “The Myth of Sisyphus”. It develops a sympathetic analysis of contemporary nihilism, and raises the nature of the absurd. Anachronism - A thing belonging or appropriate to a period other than that in which it exists, especially a thing that is conspicuously old-fashioned. Works may reflect and comment on a range of stylistic expressions and cultural-historical viewpoints. Andy Warhol - Focused on popular culture and contemporary consumerism in his ultra- representational art. Responsible for Green Coca-Cola Bottles. The starkness and repetitiveness of the composition are broken up by subtle variations. In these subtle variations, the artist takes an almost cubist like approach to the manipulation of space and image. Example of Pop art. Ansel Adams - Among the most famous of the adherents of straight photography. He emerged as a recognized leader of modern photography through his sharp, poetic landscapes of the American west. He pioneered the movement to preserve the wilderness. He was a pianist, writer, illustrator, and architect.
