PsychCh4BkQ 25/02/2008 19:12:00 1. reflex- an inborn automtic response to a particular form of stimulation rooting- stroke baby cheek, head turns toward stimulation, helps baby find  nipple sucking- put finger in baby’s mouth, baby suck rhythmically, permits feeding moro- hold baby horizontally on back and let head drop slightly… baby makes  embracing motion by arching back, extending legs, throwing arm outward and  then bring arm in toward the body… in human evolutionary past, may have  helped infant cling to mother Palmar grasp- place finger in infant’s hand and press against palm,  spontaneous grasp of finger, prepared infant for voluntary grasping Stepping- hold infant under arms and permit bare feet to touch flat surface,  infant lifts one foot after another in stepping response, prepares infant for  voluntary walking Babinski- stroke sole of foot from tow toward heel, toes fan out and curl as  foot twists in 2. five states of arousal- degrees of sleep and wakefulness… babies sleep for about 16- 18 hrs a day Regular/NREM sleep- baby at full rest, no body activity, breathing slow and  regular Irregular/REM sleep-  gentle limb movements, stirring, breathing is irregular,  occasional rapid eye movement Drowsiness- baby is either falling asleep or waking up… eyes open and  close, when open baby have glazed look, breathing is even, but faster than  regular sleep
