PsychBkQCh3 29/01/2008 18:47:00 1.  Chromosomes- rod-like structure which store an transmit genetic info      gene- a segment of DNA along the length of the chromosome cells divide by mitosis Sex cells are called sperm or ovum or gametes, and are formed through meiosis 2. monozygotic twins are identical twins = one egg and one sperm and the  zygote divides dyzygotic twin are fraternal twins = two egg, two sperm… are more common the  monozygotic 3. dominant-recessive inheritance when one allele effects the child’s  characteristics (only occurs in heterozygous pairing). Alleles are genes inherited from  mother and father. Carrier- a heterozygous individ with just one recessive allele can pass that trait to  their child.  4. Because children who inherit dominant seldom live long enough to reproduce,  so dominate allele is eliminated. 5. 21 st  chromosome does not separate correctly and  individ has 3 chromosomes  rather than 2. Prenatal period weakens over time so chromosomes do not separate properly 6. Pedigree- used to estimate the likelihood that parent will have an abnormal  child, using genetic principal blood test or genetic analyses can reveal wheter the parent is a carrier of a  harmful gene People who should get it done Ones that have difficulty bearing a child Genetic problems exist in fam Women over 35 7. Amniocentesis a hollow needle is inserted through the ab wall to get a sample of fluid in the
