PsychBkQsCh10 30/03/2008 18:41:00 1. emphasize that the broad function of emotions is to energize behavior aim at  attaining personal goals - all endeavors- cognitive prossing, social behavior and physical health 2. basic emotions- happiness, interest, surprise, fear, anger, sadness and disgust they serve as a form of survival 3. social smiling- 6-10 weeks laughter – 3-4 months 4. stranger anxiety- expression of fear to unfamiliar adults… wary of strangers secure base- babies use a familiar caregiver as a point from which to explore,  ventureing into the environment and then returning for emotional support. 5. a higher-order set of feeling: shame, embarrassment, guilt, envy, pride…  causes injury to or enhancement of our sense of self - end of 2 nd  year - when aware of self as a separate, unique individual  when adults instruct when to feel proud, ashamed or guilty 6. emotional self regulation- strategies we use to adjust our emotional state to a  comfortable level of intensity so we can accomplish our goal… requires cognitive  capacities: attention, focusing and shifting, the ability to inhibit thoughts and behavior,  and planning, or actively taking steps to relieve a stressful situation. . voluntary control improves gradually, due to development of the frontal lobes of the  cerebral cortex and the assistance of caregivers, who help kids manage their emotions infants- depend on soothing intervention of caregiver… 2-4 months, caregivers do face  to face play… the arouse pleasure so infant does not become overwhelms and  distressed After age 2- kid talks about their feeling and actively try to control them, bye 3-4 they  verbalize a variety f emotion self-regulations strategies… can distract themselves…  they watch adult handle their own feelings
