CLASSICS 221- STUDY GUIDE- SECOND EXAM The following terms and names should be useful to know for the second exam. You may not ask the instructor or teaching assistants for the meaning or significance of these terms. You are encouraged to form study groups. The exam may also have material upon it that is not directly related to the following list. Therefore, students should also review their class notes. The majority of the test will be directly related to this list.You should be able to provide a general description of the four philosophical “schools” discussed in recent lectures: Epicureans, Stoics, Platonists and Hermetic philosophers. A useful study technique would be to fill out an index card with the general attributes of each school. Good luck! Epicurus- major philosophers in the Hellenistic period , under of Epicureanism, explained everything in atoms, rejected Platonism, purpose of everything/actions is to gain pleasure Atomic theory- Democritis, everything is made of atoms which combine to make material world.
