Latham-1 Stuart Latham English 104-571 September 21, 2007 Car Maintenance 101 Sludge build up, breaks in the manifold, leaks from cracks or loose bolts… these car malfunctions are everyday occurrences and could easily be avoided if the proper steps were taken. From Sports Illustrated Magazine , Pennzoil engages the reader to consider engine problems with imagery from the shredded paper, applying to the common working force by contrasting background color and the car enthusiasts by using symbolism of the Liberty Bell. Car troubles, everybody has them at some point, so why not protect an investment from potential damage? That’s what Pennzoil wants the reader to cogitate when glancing at this advertisement. The shredded piece of paper is the main focus in the whole advertisement, drawing the audience to the overall point; engine failure. This point is conveyed by the white piece of paper, which is centered in the advertisement, shredded and torn apart symbolizing that with other brands of oil, the car engine can be expected to rip apart and disassemble itself. Pennzoil states that “an engine’s insides can be its own worst enemy” (Not Just Oil, Pennzoil), which is why Pennzoil’s arguments work so well. People who read these advertisements and use Pennzoil’s products know that Pennzoil
