The New Terrorist Front After September 11 another terrorist group surfaced to top to strike fear in the hearts of the men, women and children of the Philippines, the Abu Sayyaf. For the past seven years this group has been bombing, killing and kidnapping innocent by-standards reaching a total of “ more than 1,700” killed or injured (Collier, Sifton 3). These terrorist attacks are occurring because of the US involvement in the Philippines, the Philippine government not protecting their citizens and harboring the members of the Abu Sayyaf from prosecution, the Abu Sayyaf wanting to clean the land of Christianity. After the attacks from September 11 the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, in the Philippines ramped up its attacks and kidnapped two American Missionaries. From Larry Niksch’s report to Congress, “Abu Sayyaf: Target of Philippine-U.S. Anti-Terrorism Cooperation”, Niksch talks about how the US government shipped over “1,300 troops… and $93 million in military aid” to help the Philippine government train the Philippine army in guerilla warfare to defeat the Abu Sayyaf(Niksch 2). The main reasons that the US sent American troops over is because the Philippine President Arroyo supported the US after September 11 and Americas’ promise as world police to wipe out terrorism.
