Election of 1844 The U.S. presidential election of 1844 was the first election to see an incumbent President seek nomination and fail to receive it. Democratic nominee James K. Polk campaigned vigorously, surprising many with his stalwart support of westward expansion, James K Polk Dark horse president. Set up the Oregon territory and expanded the country. Did war with mexico to get that area and texas. Manifest Destiny coined byjohn l o’sullivan, in 1845, based on Americas sense of culturl and racial superiority, Americans were fated by providence to develop the country from atlantic to pacific, and bring ‘inferior’ peoples under Americas dominion. General Zachary Taylor Taylor was noted for his extensive military career and for becoming the first president not previously elected to any other public office. He was the second president to die in office. to end the dispute over slavery in new areas, Taylor urged settlers in New Mexico and California to draft constitutions and apply for statehood, bypassing the territorial stage.Died of Arsnic poisoning Millard Fillmore Admit California as a free state.Settle the Texas boundary and compensate the state.Grant territorial status to New Mexico.Place Federal officers at the disposal of slaveholders seeking fugitives. ( Fugitive Slave Act )Abolish the slave trade in the District of Columbia . Treaty of Paris ended the American revolution. Said America was a country, established boundaries, Land Ordinance of 1785 the immediate goal of the ordinance was to raise money through the sale of land in the largely unmapped territory west of the original colonies
