In Swan Lake, Portman plays an innocent, fragile White Swan. Portman feels a massive amount of pressure to play the role perfectly. She is competing against other girls to maintain her position in the play. It is evident that the character Nina that Portman plays is experiencing symptoms of an eating disorder, specifically anorexia. She is obsessed with being perfect. In the dancing industry people are constantly competing against each other to get the best parts. Girls need to be the best dancers and have the best body in order to succeed in the industry. Obsession is a part of dance. Nina is constantly staring in the mirror at herself, comparing herself to others. Nina barely eats throughout the day. One morning before dance all she eats is a grapefruit. Her mother begs her to eat more but Nina refuses to even finish the grapefruit.
