Psychology – Class Notes – 12/7/07 MAJOR MOTIVES IN LIFE: LOVE Chapter #14 – Pages 470-484 Monday – “Anatomy of Sex” Wednesday – Exam Review THE BIOLOGY OF LOVE Oxytocin Endorphins - These are both chemicals that are released in the Central Nervous System – Involved in love, relationship behaviors, courtship behaviors, and sexual activity. - These are also involved in labor, delivery, and breast feeding in women - Oxytocin – neurotransmitter that is released during an orgasm in males and females. o This neurotransmitter is thought to be involved in Love o Neurohormone – released into the CNS, that’s involved in sexual behavior and maternal behavior (in mothers) o If you block oxytocin, maternal behavior is not exhibited o Artificial injections of oxytocin are not effective because this neurotransmitter (chemical) cannot cross over the blood-brain barrier. In a study, subjects were exposed to oxytocin - Very little activity in the brain areas that process fears, whereas placebo exposed subjects had a normal amount
