Psychology – Class Notes – 11/16/07 ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY GOALS Discuss “abnormal” and related terms o A little background o DSM – The manual tomb of disorders that give discrete categories and criteria o Multiple causation model o Assessment HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Mostly Supernatural or magical Causes of Disease (10,000 B.C – 21 st Century) o Sorcery o God’s wrath o Supernatural possession o Losing one’s soul o Imbalance of bodily fluids Humors Imbalance would lead to different types of physical and mental illnesses o Infection o Environmental o Genes o Stress (modern day) Cause of abnormal behavior is a result of a combination of genes and stress influences and predicts that we will suffer from an abnormal physiological or mental problem
