Psychology – Class Notes – 10/3/07 STATES OF MIND Wilder Penfield – “out of the box thinker” (thinking outside the box) – he came up with the approach to help patients rid themselves of seizures – he went into the brain of patients who were consciously aware of what was going on – he tested certain areas of the brain by administering electrical impulses to stimulate different areas of the brain to determine which areas were involved with what (HIGHLY innovated) o Trying to help patients with epilepsy o He helped us develop a model of the brain that allowed us to sort of map out which areas of the brain control what physical parts of the body o He helped us see how much brain area is dedicated to certain areas of the brain. Homunculus – “Little Man” Prefrontal Cortex o As a teen-ager, Todd Hall fell off a skateboard and hit his head. Surgeons operated twice, the second time giving him a lobotomy. He was never the same after that. o
